Grim Fandango Remastered is a classic game brought into the new generation. Now for all of you youngsters out there that may not have heard of this amazing title, because it’s not a freaking first-person shooter, it’s time for us to let you know how awesome it is. Here’s the rundown:
Grim Fandango tells the story of four years in the life (or death) of Manuel “Manny” Calavera, a travel agent for the Department of Death as he attempts to save Mercedes “Meche” Colomar, a new soul, during her journey through the Land of the Dead to the Ninth Underworld, the final destination for the recently departed. The game combines elements from Mexican folklore and style aspects of film noir, including The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca and On the Waterfront, to create the Land of the Dead. It’s a truly unique world that you’ll have fun just walking around and talking to other characters.
Grim Fandango was also in our opinion, one of the the last great adventure games to come from Lucasarts, but it also came out at a bad time, because when it launched back in 1998, it was overshadowed by some of the defining games of the time, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Half-Life, and Metal Gear Solid. Grim Fandango went on to become somewhat of a gaming cult classic, following the termination of LucasArts’ adventure game development.

Grim Fandango Remastered is exactly the same game from back in the day. It’s still a game primarily about talking to other characters and using items to solve puzzles. Like the original, Manny starts out as a travel agent and goes on to chase the girl of his dreams, while uncovering some dark secrets along the way. The game can seem a bit dated, but there are some important changes that make this version a game that players will enjoy in 2015 — like the game supporting wide-screen resolutions, reworked visuals, without altering the game’s art style too much. The score has also been re-recorded with a live orchestra, bring full, rich sound to the already amazing score.
Almost two decades after the original, modern players can finally discover what they’ve been missing all these years with Grim Fandango — and there’s still nothing that comes close.
