What’s it about?

In the far reaches of space, Adventurer Peter Quill A.K.A. Star-Lord finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan the Destroyer. To evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy alliance with a group of misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the super-sexy and equally deadly Gamora and revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to, well… everything, he has to rally his ragtag team for a last stand — with the galaxy’s fate hanging in the balance.

What we think about it

Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely the funniest Marvel movie we’ve seen so far, and it’s way different than anything they’ve been doing up to this point. It’s a great sci-fi adventure-comedy with a lot of clever dialogue and a memorable cast of characters. It’s a similar group dynamic to The Avengers, but made more impressive by the fact that they haven’t had several movies to introduce the characters. The movie has very little to do with the Avengers specifically and instead includes the greater Marvel Universe, using characters and alien races we’ve seen bits and pieces of before.

The tone is very unique, as it bounces back and forth between comedy and genuine drama with some awesome action scenes. If you’ve been following Marvel’s movies so far, you’ll want to see this since it helps to expand Marvel’s cinematic universe while setting the stage for future Avengers films. And if you haven’t been following the franchise much or not at all, it still works as an adventure movie. The main characters don’t have much to do with any of the movies so far, and while there are one or two faces we’ve seen before, especially in the villain department, you won’t need to know them to be.
